Atlassian launched new AI capabilities within Jira to create a system for AI-native software development. Users can now assign coding work items directly from Jira to third-party AI agents including Claude Code, Cursor, and GitHub Copilot. Support for Codex is expected in a future update. This initiative aims to close a productivity gap where high AI adoption has not yet increased engineering velocity.

The features are available to paid Jira Cloud customers at no additional cost. A native Jira Coding Agent can now convert work items into pull requests. Atlassian’s Teamwork Graph powers the system by providing enterprise context to improve AI accuracy.

The update includes Jira Planner for generating technical specifications and enhanced integrations for Slack and Loom. New cost management reports allow organizations to track the return on their AI investments.
