A software programming error within the regenerative braking system causes the battery to overcharge. This overcharging can trigger a sudden shutdown of the electric drive system while the vehicle is in motion. Toyota confirmed the defect is a software bug rather than a physical issue with battery cells or motors.
The unexpected loss of power increases the risk of a collision. Toyota will notify affected owners in early November. Dealerships will perform a free software update to the battery's electronic control unit. These vehicles are not equipped to receive the fix via over-the-air updates.
