Thomson Reuters plans to launch its proprietary large language model, Thomson, in the summer of 2026. The company built the model using open-source systems and its extensive legal data store. This initiative follows the 2024 acquisition of Safe Sign, a UK-based firm that developed a small legal language model.
The Thomson model will enhance the CoCounsel AI assistant. It aims to improve contract analysis and legal research functionalities.
CTO Joel Hron reports that internal benchmarks show the model already outperforms general models in several key legal tasks. The company intends to expand this performance advantage across more areas before the official launch.
