Tesla Inc. received a five-week extension to respond to a defect investigation initiated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The probe focuses specifically on the company's Full Self-Driving (FSD) software.

This investigation is part of a wider regulatory review covering nearly 2.9 million Tesla vehicles equipped with FSD. The NHTSA launched the inquiry following reports of thousands of potential traffic violations linked to the system.

Regulators are specifically examining at least 58 reports detailing traffic-safety issues connected to FSD. These allegations include running red lights, driving into oncoming traffic, and other dangerous maneuvers. Reports indicate these incidents have led to crashes and injuries.

The continued scrutiny highlights the regulatory risks associated with Tesla’s autonomous driving technology. If the NHTSA concludes the software poses an unreasonable safety risk, the agency could force the company to conduct a mandatory recall.
