Tesla is recalling nearly 3 million vehicles in China. This action is part of a broader regulatory sweep involving nine automakers. The total recall affects more than 7 million vehicles.
Regulators warn that interior emergency door releases are difficult to operate during power failures. This defect could trap occupants inside vehicles following severe crashes.
Major manufacturers including Xiaomi, Xpeng, and Leapmotor are participating in the coordinated recall. Automakers will add new warning labels to emergency door releases.
Tesla and most other brands will also issue over-the-air software updates to automatically lower windows after collisions. The recall precedes a new Chinese national standard banning purely electronic hidden door handles by 2027.
