The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) granted Tesla a regulatory waiver to utilize Ultra Wideband (UWB) technology for its Cybercab wireless charging system. This waiver bypasses current restrictions that typically prohibit fixed outdoor UWB infrastructure.

The FCC determined that Tesla’s low-power, short-duration system will not cause signal interference or undermine existing safety rules. UWB radios allow the Cybercab to precisely position itself over floor-mounted pads to initiate wireless inductive charging.

This automated charging capability serves as a foundational component for Tesla’s planned autonomous robotaxi network. Tesla has reportedly commenced early production of the Cybercab at its Texas Gigafactory.
