Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced a major change to the availability of its Full Self-Driving (FSD) software. After February 14, 2026, FSD will only be offered as a monthly subscription.
This shifts the model away from the current purchase options. Currently, customers can buy the advanced driver-assistance system for a one-time fee of about $8,000. Alternatively, the system is available via a subscription priced at $99 per month.
The subscription-only model aligns with Tesla’s increasing focus on technology initiatives, including FSD, robotaxis, and robotics. This shift occurs as the company faces growing competition in the electric vehicle market. Musk did not explicitly disclose the reason for the strategic change. Tesla maintains that FSD remains an assistance feature requiring active driver supervision.
