TSMC CEO C.C. Wei announced the company will manufacture advanced 3-nanometer chips at its second plant in Kumamoto, Japan. This decision marks a significant technological upgrade from the facility's original 7-nanometer production plan.

The total investment for the Kumamoto site is now expected to reach ¥2.6 trillion (US$17 billion). Wei communicated the shift during a meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi.

The advanced chips will target high-growth sectors including artificial intelligence, robotics, and autonomous driving. This move aligns with Japan’s strategic goal to strengthen domestic semiconductor manufacturing and enhance national economic security.
