United Airlines is placing multiple Boeing 777 aircraft into long-term storage. The planes feature Pratt & Whitney PW4000 engines. This decision follows ongoing engine reliability issues and persistent parts shortages.
The affected fleet represents 54% of United’s total Boeing 777s. It also accounts for 23% of the airline’s total widebody fleet. These disruptions are impacting operations on crucial high-density routes across Hawaii, Asia, and Europe.
The move follows a history of engine problems, including a significant failure on a 2021 flight from Denver. That incident prompted a multi-year inspection and modification program. Continued issues now risk regulatory action that could restrict United’s key overwater routes.
