United Airlines renewed its push for a controversial artificial intelligence-based scheduling system for flight attendants, a proposal previously withdrawn following significant backlash. The move surprised the Association of Flight Attendants (AFA-CWA) during renewed contract negotiations.

The AFA-CWA vehemently rejected the plan, labeling the reintroduction a demand for concessions. The AI scheduling system, known as a Preferential Bidding System, remains a key point of friction in the talks.

Negotiations are now paused until mid-January 2026. The talks also cover economic improvements. Resolution of the AI system and other outstanding issues remains pending until the resumption date.
