United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby reportedly discussed a potential merger with American Airlines Group with senior government officials. Bloomberg first reported the discussions involving two of the four largest U.S. carriers.

The combination would create the largest airline in the world. Such a deal would face intense opposition from consumer advocates and rigorous antitrust examination from regulators.

Official details remain scarce on whether formal overtures have been made or if a deal process is underway.

American Airlines shares rose 4.7% in post-market trading on April 13. United Airlines stock gained 1.1% following the news.
