A federal jury in Waco, Texas, ordered Japanese chipmaker Kioxia to pay satellite communications company Viasat $229 million. The payment is for infringing on a patent for flash-memory technology. The jury found Kioxia's products violated Viasat's patented technology, which reduces power consumption and improves memory device reliability and lifespan.
Kioxia stated it cannot accept the verdict. The company will consider all legal options, including an appeal. Kioxia maintains a long-standing joint venture with Western Digital, manufacturing flash memory in Japan. Viasat has a similar ongoing patent lawsuit against Western Digital, also claiming infringement on memory technology patents.
