The Canadian government’s Defence Investment Agency awarded a $32-million contract to MDA Space for the Surveillance of Space 2 project. Stephen Fuhr, Secretary of State for Defence Procurement, announced the investment as part of Canada’s Defence Industrial Strategy. The strategy aims to modernize the Canadian Armed Forces and strengthen the domestic defense industry.

MDA Space will construct three remotely operated telescope sites in Alberta, Manitoba, and New Brunswick by 2028. These ground-based optical facilities will provide persistent surveillance of space-based assets. The project addresses the increasing importance of space as a contested domain for national security.

The contract will support nearly 80 jobs annually. It is projected to contribute approximately $9 million to Canada’s GDP each year for the next six years. This initiative leverages Canadian innovation to deliver advanced military capabilities while generating domestic economic growth.
