Spain has initiated preliminary government-to-government negotiations with Türkiye to acquire the Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI) Kaan stealth fighter. TAI’s CEO confirmed the discussions on May 7, 2026. Madrid is evaluating the aircraft as a replacement for its aging combat fleet.

The move signals Spanish concerns regarding potential delays in the European Future Combat Air System (FCAS) program. Officials also aim to avoid the operational restrictions and logistical dependencies associated with the American F-35 platform.

This potential deal follows Spain’s existing agreement to purchase Turkish Hürjet advanced trainers. A Kaan acquisition would introduce new competition for Lockheed Martin’s F-35, which currently serves as a cornerstone for many NATO air forces.

While the Kaan remains in development, Spain’s interest reflects a broader trend of U.S. allies seeking greater sovereign control over military assets. This shift could impact future global sales for the F-35 program.
