Amazon acquired satellite operator Globalstar today to enhance its Leo satellite network. This acquisition secures Globalstar’s satellite infrastructure and valuable MSS spectrum licenses.
The deal expands connectivity for the Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud platform. It bridges the gap between remote edge computing and the AWS cloud in hard-to-reach locations. This infrastructure enables new direct-to-device (D2D) services beyond the reach of traditional cellular networks.
Amazon and Apple also finalized an agreement to offer satellite connectivity for recent iPhone and Apple Watch models. This integrated system has a target launch date of 2028. The move positions Amazon to compete directly in the growing satellite-to-device market.
