The National Retail Federation reported that retail sales rose for the seventh consecutive month in April.
Total sales excluding auto dealers and gas stations increased 0.34% seasonally adjusted from March. Unadjusted sales grew 5.73% year-over-year.
Growth persisted despite high inflation, rising gas prices, and cautious consumer sentiment. The NRF based its report on actual credit and debit card purchase data.
A steady labor market and wage growth continue to support household spending. Clothing, sporting goods, and health and personal care stores recorded the strongest year-over-year gains.
