Tesla and SpaceX are partnering to construct two advanced chip manufacturing facilities in Austin, Texas. This initiative, known as Terafab, aims to secure a stable supply of specialized semiconductors. These chips are essential for electric vehicles, humanoid robots, and future artificial intelligence applications.
One factory will manufacture semiconductors for the automotive and robotics divisions. The second facility will produce AI systems specifically for space applications.
CEO Elon Musk stated that current global chip production can only meet 3% of Tesla's future requirements. This move reduces reliance on external suppliers and addresses the risk of global semiconductor shortages. In-house manufacturing allows Tesla to control its supply chain and support growth in the AI sector.
