American Airlines is increasing checked baggage fees for domestic and short-haul international flights.
The new rates apply to tickets purchased on or after April 9. The first checked bag will cost $50. The second checked bag will cost $60. These prices reflect a $10 increase for each bag.
Customers receive a $5 discount for each of the first two bags if they prepay online or through the mobile app.
Management cited rising jet fuel prices and the current operating environment as primary drivers for the move. This decision follows similar price hikes recently implemented by United Airlines and Delta Air Lines.
American is also adjusting Basic Economy fares to further distinguish no-frills tickets from standard Main Cabin offerings. AAdvantage elite status members and certain co-branded credit card holders will continue to receive complimentary checked bags.
