Apple is lobbying the Trump administration for clearance to purchase memory chips from ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT). The move responds to soaring memory prices driven by the global AI boom. These rising costs recently prompted Apple to increase prices for its iPad and MacBook models.

By adding CXMT as a vendor, Apple aims to alleviate cost pressures and reduce reliance on Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron. However, CXMT remains on a Pentagon list of companies with alleged ties to the Chinese military. This designation complicates potential procurement deals.

The global memory shortage has intensified as major producers shift focus to high-margin chips for AI servers. This shift continues to squeeze the supply available for consumer electronics. Apple previously abandoned a deal with a different Chinese chipmaker in 2022 following political opposition.
