Apple launched a phased rollout of credit and debit card payments for App Store and iCloud purchases in India. This move ends a suspension of Visa and Mastercard transactions that began in 2021.
The initial halt followed Reserve Bank of India (RBI) regulations for recurring payments. These rules mandated a card tokenization framework and local data storage.
Apple adapted its payment infrastructure to comply with these requirements. During the hiatus, Indian users relied on the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), net banking, or Apple ID balance top-ups.
