Amazon announced its involvement in the development of one of the first small modular reactor (SMR) nuclear power facilities in the United States, in partnership with Energy Northwest. The facility, named the Cascade Advanced Energy Facility and located in Washington state, will provide carbon-free energy to power Amazon's data centers, which support its AI and cloud computing services through Amazon Web Services (AWS). The initial phase of the project will feature four advanced reactors from X-energy with a capacity of 320 MW, with the potential to expand to 960 MW. Construction is anticipated to begin by the end of the decade, with the facility targeted to be operational in the 2030s. The project is expected to create over 1,000 construction jobs and more than 100 permanent positions. This move is a significant step in Amazon's strategy to secure a reliable, carbon-free energy source for its rapidly growing and energy-intensive AI and cloud infrastructure.
