Amazon.com Inc. today announced a landmark investment of up to $50 billion to expand its artificial intelligence and supercomputing capabilities for U.S. government agencies through its Amazon Web Services (AWS) division. The initiative will involve constructing new data centers designed to meet strict federal security standards, adding approximately 1.3 gigawatts of new computing capacity. This investment aims to provide government clients with advanced AI tools, including models from partner Anthropic and chips from both Nvidia and Amazon's own semiconductor division. The expansion will support a wide range of national interest missions, from scientific research and cybersecurity to energy innovation and healthcare. Construction on the new data centers is slated to begin in 2026. Separately, but underscoring its aggressive expansion to meet AI-driven demand, Amazon also announced a $15 billion investment to build new data center campuses in Northern Indiana. This project is distinct from the government initiative and adds to a previous $11 billion commitment in the state, aiming to create over 1,000 jobs.
