Amazon is in talks to acquire satellite operator Globalstar, according to sources familiar with the matter.

The acquisition aims to bolster Project Kuiper, Amazon’s low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite network. This expansion targets global broadband internet delivery to compete more effectively with SpaceX’s Starlink service.

Apple’s existing partnership with Globalstar complicates the potential deal. Apple holds a substantial equity stake in the satellite company.

Globalstar’s network currently powers the Emergency SOS feature for Apple iPhones.
