The U.S. National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) ordered Amazon to recognize and negotiate with the Amazon Labor Union (ALU). This union represents approximately 5,500 workers at the JFK8 warehouse in Staten Island.
The board ruled that Amazon engaged in unfair labor practices by refusing to bargain after the union's 2022 election victory. The ALU has since affiliated with the International Brotherhood of Teamsters.
Amazon will appeal the decision to a federal court. A company spokesperson stated the original election was improperly influenced by the NLRB and union representatives. This legal challenge is expected to delay the start of contract negotiations.
