Amazon’s Data Services unit acquired George Washington University’s 120-acre Virginia Science and Technology Campus for approximately $427 million. The site is located in Loudoun County, a primary hub for data center infrastructure in the United States. Amazon intends to develop the property into a data or information technology center to expand its cloud computing and artificial intelligence capabilities.

The purchase supports Amazon’s broader strategy to invest $35 billion in Virginia-based data centers by 2040. This expansion addresses the rising demand for Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud and AI offerings. Amazon shares fell 2.0% in premarket trading on Tuesday following the news.
