Amazon is contacting former employees, including those affected by recent mass layoffs, to fill roles in its artificial intelligence and cloud computing divisions. The company seeks to accelerate recruitment of scarce AI talent amid intensifying competition with Google, Meta, and OpenAI.
Recruiters are offering some former staff an expedited interview process. Within the AWS division, the outreach is titled Swami's Boomerang Reengagement Initiative, named after AWS Vice President Swami Sivasubramanian.
An Amazon spokesperson stated that rehiring former employees is a longstanding, company-wide practice. The company maintains that these efforts are not limited to AI or cloud-specific roles.
