Amazon is launching Project Mercury to expand its U.S. same-day delivery network. The company currently operates approximately 85 fulfillment sites. Internal plans aim to increase this total to over 1,000 locations. Amazon targets completion of this expansion by 2031. The initiative represents a more than tenfold increase in network capacity.
The strategy positions facilities within a 10-mile radius of customers. This network would reach 80% of U.S. Prime subscribers. Amazon allocated $6.8 billion for capacity expansion across 2026 and 2027.
The move strengthens Amazon's competitive edge in the retail and grocery sectors. While a spokesperson called the projections preliminary, the plan highlights a major strategic push to enhance delivery efficiency.
