Amazon requested an extension from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) for Project Kuiper, acknowledging it will miss the July 30, 2026, deadline.

The company must launch 1,600 satellites (half of the planned 3,200 constellation) by that date to maintain authorization.

Amazon anticipates having only 700 satellites in orbit, significantly below the required 1,600.

Amazon is asking the FCC for a two-year extension to reach the 50% deployment milestone.

Project Kuiper is Amazon's direct competitor to SpaceX’s Starlink.

To assure regulators, Amazon secured launch capacity for over 100 missions through the first quarter of 2029.
