Amazon has agreed to a $2.5 billion settlement with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) concerning allegations of using misleading 'dark patterns' to make it difficult for customers to cancel their Prime subscriptions. As part of the settlement, Amazon will pay $1.5 billion directly to US users who were affected by these practices between June 2019 and June 2025. The FTC accused the company of intentionally complicating the cancellation process, which led to millions of users remaining subscribed against their will. This settlement is one of the largest consumer refunds in US history. Millions of customers who attempted to cancel their Prime membership during the specified period may be eligible for automatic refunds or can file a claim through a new portal established by Amazon.
