Amazon Web Services (AWS) has released Strands Decider 2B, an open-source AI decision model developed by its Strand Labs. Rather than generate text, the model selects quickly and cheaply from predefined options. It is designed for tasks such as routing requests, evaluating outputs and approving automated actions.

The release responds to the emerging market for decision models, recently popularized by startup TypeSafe AI’s Jev model. Unlike large language models that generate prose, Strands Decider returns structured answers, such as choices and probabilities, that can be integrated into software workflows.

The model has 2 billion parameters and is available free under a permissive license. Amazon aims to accelerate adoption and compete in the new AI category.
