Amazon is reportedly discussing a deal to sell about $8 billion worth of advanced Nvidia AI chips to a special-purpose vehicle (SPV), then lease them back. The move could strengthen its balance sheet and support a more asset-light approach as the company prepares for projected capital expenditures of $220 billion in 2026, largely for AWS and AI data centers.

The discussions come as hyperscalers face financing pressure from heavy investment in AI. Amazon also announced it is raising prices by about 15% for EC2 Capacity Blocks, which rent computing power on Nvidia chips.

The chip-sale discussions are ongoing and could change. Amazon has not officially commented on them.

Amazon shares reportedly rose 1% in premarket trading after the news. CEO Andy Jassy has said that, despite the company’s spending, capacity is unlikely to meet all demand in 2026 and 2027.
