Amazon announced the closure of its San Francisco-based Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) Lab on July 24, 2026. The move triggers a new round of layoffs within the company’s broader AGI division. The lab operated for only 18 months with a focus on developing AI agents for business applications.
This restructuring follows significant leadership changes at the firm. Executive Rohit Prasad departed in late 2025, and lab head David Luan left in February 2026. Amazon is now consolidating the AGI organization under Senior Vice President Peter DeSantis, aligning it with the chip and quantum computing teams.
While Amazon did not disclose the exact number of job cuts, the company is reallocating resources to accelerate projects with higher customer impact. Amazon stated it remains committed to developing large-scale AI models despite the lab closure.
