The Walt Disney Company is changing its streaming strategy through a significant nonexclusive licensing agreement with Netflix. [1, 9] The deal will bring a mix of current television series, library titles and animated films to Netflix, while the content remains available on Disney’s own services. [8]
The licensed titles include “Percy Jackson and the Olympians,” the “Ice Age” film franchise and select Pixar movies, including “Soul” and “Raya and the Last Dragon.” [2, 4] Marvel and Star Wars titles will remain exclusive to Disney+. [1]
The agreement is intended to generate additional revenue and use Netflix’s large subscriber base to promote upcoming seasons and theatrical releases. [5, 8] For example, the first two seasons of “Percy Jackson” will stream on Netflix for a promotional window ahead of the third season’s premiere on Disney+. [2, 3]
