OpenAI is discontinuing its Sora text-to-video generation platform. This move comes three months after securing a major partnership with The Walt Disney Company.
OpenAI signed the partnership agreement in December 2025. The deal included a $1 billion equity investment from Disney. The contract established a three-year licensing agreement for intellectual property. This license covered over 200 characters from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, and Star Wars.
Disney confirmed the partnership will no longer proceed. A company spokesperson stated they respect OpenAI's decision to exit the video generation sector.
OpenAI has not released a detailed reason for the shutdown. Reports suggest the company is shifting its focus toward robotics and business applications. The firm will share timelines for discontinuing the Sora app and API soon.
