Equinor ASA announced on June 26, 2026, that it will discontinue its offshore wind business in Japan. The company will close its Tokyo office by the end of the year to concentrate on integrated power markets.
Equinor entered the Japanese market in 2018 but failed to win any licenses in national offshore wind auctions. The company cited rising costs as a primary driver for this withdrawal and similar exits in other countries.
This decision follows Equinor’s move to abandon its 2030 renewable capacity target earlier in June. Management intends to apply the knowledge gained from Japanese operations to its remaining global offshore wind projects.
