Boeing 777-9 testing faces 2027 extension, citing GE engine durability issues

Boeing may extend its 777-9 flight-test program into 2027. Durability issues with the GE Aerospace GE9X engine mid-seal caused the delay. Repairs to the engine component proved more extensive than initially anticipated.

The technical flaw prevents Boeing from beginning critical ETOPS certification testing. Federal Aviation Administration approval for ETOPS is mandatory for the aircraft to operate long-haul international routes.

Boeing still targets the first 777-9 delivery for 2027. This engine setback adds further pressure to the already delayed aircraft program.
