GE Aerospace paused deliveries of GE9X turbofan engines, the exclusive powerplant for Boeing's 777-9 aircraft. A durability issue involving a crack in the engine's mid-seal caused the shipment halt. This component is located between the engine's turbine stages.
Inspectors first identified the crack during a routine test engine check in January 2026. GE has since determined the root cause and is developing a corrective modification. The GE9X is the largest and most powerful commercial aircraft engine ever built.
Boeing expects GE to resume engine deliveries by October 2026. The pause is not expected to delay the overall 777-9 program. Both companies confirm that the first aircraft delivery remains on track for 2027.
