Alphabet is restructuring its internet service provider business, GFiber, through a merger with Astound Broadband. Google will transition to a minority shareholder in the newly combined independent entity.

The deal creates one of the largest independent fiber networks in the United States. Alphabet originally launched the GFiber service in 2010.

This spin-off allows Alphabet to prioritize its core AI and cloud infrastructure businesses. The strategic move enables the company to monetize long-term infrastructure investments while exiting the operational challenges of the consumer internet market.
