Google and energy storage developer Energy Dome announced their first bilateral commercial contract. This contract is for a long-duration energy storage project in County Offaly, Ireland.
The facility will utilize Energy Dome's novel CO2 Battery technology. It will have a capacity of 23 megawatts. It will also provide 200 megawatt-hours of storage. This initiative stems from a broader partnership announced by the companies last year.
The project aims to enhance the stability of the Irish electrical grid. It also supports Google's goal to operate its data centers and offices on 24/7 carbon-free energy. Google targets this by 2030.
Energy Dome's CO2-based system stores energy by compressing carbon dioxide. It releases the CO2 to power a turbine when electricity is needed. This technology uses readily available components. It avoids reliance on critical minerals such as lithium.
