Google and Tesla formed the Utilize industry coalition to overhaul U.S. electrical grid management and regulation. The group claims the grid is significantly underutilized, with large portions of capacity sitting idle for most of the year.
Utilize will partner with state officials and regulators to implement policies for smarter infrastructure use. The initiative responds to surging energy demands from AI and data centers that strain the current power system. These energy pressures contribute to higher electricity bills for consumers.
Founding members include data-center developer Verrus, Carrier, Sparkfund, and SPAN. The coalition estimates that optimized grid utilization could save U.S. consumers between $100 billion and $180 billion over the next decade.
