Google and Xcel Energy have finalized a clean energy agreement to power a new data center in Pine Island, Minnesota.

The partnership facilitates the addition of 1,900 MW of new carbon-free energy. This capacity includes 1,400 MW of wind power. The agreement also incorporates 200 MW of solar power.

The project features an iron-air battery system from Form Energy with 300 MW of capacity. The system provides 30 GWh of energy storage. This 100-hour battery is the largest long-duration storage project announced globally. The technology stores excess renewable energy to provide the data center with consistent, 24/7 carbon-free power.

Google will cover all costs for the new service. This arrangement ensures that existing Xcel Energy customers will not face rate increases.
