Google signed an agreement with the U.S. Department of Defense to provide artificial intelligence models for classified operations. The contract allows the Pentagon to utilize Google’s AI for any lawful government purpose. This deal expands an existing partnership and follows the recent integration of Gemini AI models into the military's unclassified GenAI.mil platform.

Hundreds of Google employees signed a letter urging the company to reject the classified military work. Staff members expressed concerns that the technology could facilitate mass surveillance or the development of autonomous weapons. Internal opposition previously forced Google to withdraw from a military drone AI project in 2018.
