The European Union unveiled draft proposals under the Digital Markets Act (DMA) to compel Google to grant rival artificial intelligence services deeper access to the Android operating system. These measures require Google to provide competing AI assistants, such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Anthropic’s Claude, the same interoperability levels currently enjoyed by its Gemini AI.

The proposals aim to increase consumer choice by allowing rival services to integrate deeply with Android hardware and software. This includes the ability for third-party AI to use custom wake words and interact directly with other apps on the device.

Google criticized the draft as an unwarranted intervention that could compromise user privacy, security, and device maker autonomy. The EU Commission is seeking feedback on the measures until May 13, 2026, with a final decision expected by the end of July.
