Alphabet's Google announced its first corporate agreement to purchase electricity from a gas-fired power plant equipped with carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology. The deal is intended to supply power to its data centers in the U.S. Midwest, addressing the massive energy demands required for the expansion of artificial intelligence technologies while adhering to clean energy objectives. The agreement supports the new 400-megawatt Broadwing Energy plant in Illinois, which is designed to capture and permanently store approximately 90% of its carbon dioxide emissions. By committing to buy most of the power, Google is enabling the construction of this new baseload energy source, which is expected to come online in the early 2030s. This move is part of a broader strategy by major tech companies to secure vast amounts of power to fuel their growth in generative AI. Google has recently made other deals involving advanced nuclear, geothermal, and hydropower to meet its energy needs.
