The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) ordered autonomous vehicle companies to address a clear pattern of interference with emergency responders.
Agency records show driverless vehicles entering active emergency scenes and obstructing ambulances or fire trucks. The vehicles failed to respond to standard emergency signals including flashing lights and flares.
NHTSA Administrator Jonathan Morrison stated that vehicles unable to interact safely with first responders pose a public danger. The agency summoned AV developers to present technical solutions during meetings scheduled by the end of the month.
NHTSA warned it will exercise enforcement authority against companies that fail to address these safety concerns.
