The U.S. Department of Defense is considering terminating its partnership with Anthropic following a standoff over the military applications of the Claude AI model. Anthropic has refused to permit its technology for mass domestic surveillance or fully autonomous weaponry, citing internal ethical guidelines.
The Pentagon is pushing for unrestricted AI use for all lawful purposes, including sensitive intelligence and battlefield operations. Defense officials are reportedly considering replacing the firm after months of negotiations failed to resolve the impasse.
Other major AI developers, including Google and OpenAI, remain in active discussions with the Pentagon. These competitors have reportedly demonstrated greater flexibility regarding military usage restrictions than Anthropic.
