Alphabet's autonomous driving unit, Waymo, announced its intention to launch its driverless ride-hailing service in London next year, which will be its first European market and second international one after Tokyo. The company stated that it plans to offer fully autonomous rides, without a human driver, in 2026. In the upcoming months, Waymo will start testing a small fleet with safety drivers in a 100-square-mile area. Unlike its U.S. strategy of partnering with Uber and Lyft, Waymo plans to operate through its own app in London, creating direct competition with major ride-hailing services. Uber is also aiming for a 2026 timeline to start autonomous vehicle trials in London with its partner Wayve Technologies.
