Waymo's autonomous vehicles have started providing rides to and from San Francisco International Airport (SFO) for the first time. This marks a significant expansion for the Alphabet-owned company, which has been offering airport transportation in Phoenix for over a year. The service launch follows a multi-phase approval process that included mapping the airport routes in March 2025 and gaining permission for testing with a safety driver in September 2025.
Initially, the SFO service will be available to a limited group of riders, with plans for a broader public rollout in the coming months. The designated pickup and drop-off location is the airport's rental car center, where travelers can connect to the terminals via the AirTrain tram. This move is seen as a key step in San Francisco's push for transportation innovation and its economic recovery.
