Elon Musk’s xAI is overhauling its engineering team to integrate more closely with SpaceX. Michael Nicolls, SpaceX Senior Vice President of Starlink, assumed the additional role of xAI president to lead the effort.
An internal memo from Nicolls stated that xAI is clearly behind its rivals and must catch up quickly. The reorganization follows the departure of several co-founders after SpaceX acquired xAI earlier this year.
New leadership will head the model pre-training, product, and infrastructure teams. The restructuring aims to accelerate progress against competitors including OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic.
