YouTube has updated its advertiser-friendly content guidelines to allow monetization on some videos dealing with controversial subjects. The policy change permits creators to earn full ad revenue on non-graphic, dramatized, or discussion-based content covering topics like abortion, suicide, self-harm, and domestic and sexual abuse.
Previously, videos focusing on these subjects faced limited or no monetization, regardless of their context or non-graphic nature. YouTube stated the revision aims to allow creators to responsibly discuss complex subjects and monetize valuable conversations without disincentivizing them. However, content that graphically depicts these issues or focuses on topics like child abuse and eating disorders will remain ineligible for full ad revenue.
